Syrian opposition in a meeting Wednesday in Antalya, Turkey, calls for “immediate resignation” of President Bashar al-Assad, according to a joint statement which was read Thursday by the organizers.
Delegates meeting in the seaside resort of Antalya, southern Turkey, “require the immediate resignation of President Bashar al-Assad from all positions he occupies”, reads the text.
Opponents also require, “free and transparent parliamentary and presidential elections within a period not exceeding one year” after Assad’s resignation, the document points out, greeted with applause.
Militants pledge to “do their utmost to remove the Syrian regime”.
“Congress for change in Syria” has also addressed an important message to the international community to put pressure on the Damascus regime for political reform, opposing “any foreign intervention” similar to Libya.
“We have to do everything to preserve the unity and territorial integrity of Syria”, the document continues.
From the start, in mid-March of demonstrations contesting the regime, about 1,100 people were killed by Syrian security forces, according to the opposition.
About 300 opponents and activists, most exiled abroad who gathered in a luxury hotel in Antalya for a first meeting of this magnitude, have rejected the general amnesty proclaimed by the Syrian president on Tuesday night.
The official Sana agency announced on Wednesday that President Assad ordered the formation of a commission to deal with the establishment of the national dialogue.
“Bashar al-Assad will be the one who will need amnesty because he killed people”, said Mulhem al-Drubi, spokesman for the Muslim Brothers, currently in Antalya.
