Nokia dropped to 7th place on the smartphone market

Smartphone sales 2012The sales of giant Finnish company Nokia fell sharply in the third quarter of this year, according to research firm Gartner. BlackBerry makers have somehow recovered.

Nokia sales fell in the third quarter of this year, and the Finns are now on the 7th place in the top of smartphone makers, dropping from last year’s  3rd place. Meanwhile, South Koreans from Samsung keep their leading position, according to a study by research firm Gartner.

The global market for smartphones rose by 47% in the third quarter to 169.2 million units, dominated by the leading two manufacturers, Samsung and Apple.

Strong demand for Galaxy series devices has helped Samsung to sell 55 million smartphones in the third quarter. The South-Korean group controls 32.5% of the global market for smartphones.

In the same period, Apple sold 23.6 million units, representing a market share of 14%. Apple’s sales in the third quarter were influenced by postponing purchases for some customers, waiting for the launch of the new iPhone 5 model. The Cupertino based company it’s on its way to another good holiday season after launching the new devices in China and other parts of the world.

“The two top manufacturers together control 46.5% of the smartphone market and a fairly large group is fighting for third place,” said Anshul Gupta, principal analyst at Gartner.

Nokia’s market share continued to decline in the third quarter. The group sold only 7.2 million smartphones, representing a market share of 4.2%.

RIM, the maker of BlackBerry phones, came in third place in the sales charts, with 8.9 million units and 5.2% market share, and HTC is on the fourth place in the top.

Nokia has had trouble keeping up with other smartphone manufacturers, despite the launch of the Nokia Lumia 900, which totaled 4 million units sold worldwide.

While the smartphone market grew by almost 50% in the third quarter, sales of mobile phones globally fell by 3% to 428 million units.
