The number of Americans enrolled in Facebook in December fell by 1.4 million, according to data provided Tuesday by the agency that monitors the social network site, SocialBakers quoted by Market Watch. Facebook has lost 600,000 users in the UK, one of the best markets in the world for the social networking in terms of online spending, according to the same data. The social network has 1 billion users worldwide, of which 167 million U.S.
“Facebook has reached a point where the less interested audience does probably not return to the site at least once within 30 days,” said Executive Director of SocialBaker, Jan Rezab.
The main reasons that could cause the decline in the number of users are the introduction of ads and experimental fees that are not received very well. For example, in early January Facebook announced an experimental fee of up to $100 in the U.S. for those who want to send messages to people outside their friends list.
Although the Christmas period is normal for the number of users to fall, this is not normal for the UK, as England is one of the most active 10 territories on the Facebook map. The lower number of Facebook users at the end of the year may be due to the fact that the social network had reached saturation in key markets so that sustained growth will depend more on unexplored regions in other areas of the globe.
In the top of the online monitoring company SocialBakers, the UK is in the sixth place among the most active users in the world. Last month of 2012, over 33 million unique visits were recorded in the UK. The figures includes the users who access Facebook while on multiple devices. U.S. ranks first among the most unique users per month, with over 169 million people, followed by Brazil with over 65 million users and 63 million users in India.
