Police told on Friday that Oprah Winfrey’s school for girls in South Africa was going through another traumatic event as the dead body of a new born was discovered in a student’s bag.
Police Lt. Col. Lungelo Dlamini stated to ABC News that the body was found on Wednesday in a 17 year old girl’s bag when she came to the hospital for excessive bleeding treatment.
It has been assumed that the girl gave birth to the new born at her school which is Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, located outside Johannesburg. The identity of the girl has not been disclosed by the Police.
So far no charges have been filed against the girl and after the investigation has been finalized the case will be discussed with the Director for Public Prosecution.
As confirmed by the Police Capt. Shado Mashobane, the girl is still under treatment in the hospital.
Spokesperson for the School told ABC News that they can’t give any comments on the incident as a minor is involved.
The school opened by Oprah in 2007 has been facing problems and scandals in the past as well. The purpose of the school was to provide quality education to under-privileged girls. Shortly after its opening, the school’s matron Virginia Tiny Mikopo was charged with sexually molesting several girls. Oprah had to come to South Africa to apologize to the students and their parents and sympathized by telling her own sexual abuse experience. The school’s headmistress Lerato Nomvuyo Mzamane was fired after the incident.
Winfrey said that nothing can be more damaging and disappointing than an allegation of misconduct done by an adult to any girl of the academy. Winfrey had said that she would do anything within her power to ensure the safety of the girls at the school.
