Angela Merkel new EU treatyGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel calls for a new treaty of the European Union (EU) and tries to persuade Germay’s partners to this end, according to Monday’s edition of weekly newspaper Der Spiegel.

“The federal government wants to determine the progress of the European integration,” writes the magazine, which states that Merkel would like the “heads of state and government to attend a meeting to setup the new legal basis for the EU”.

According to Der Spiegel, “European Affairs Adviser for the Chancellor, Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut led the negotiations around this project inBrussels”.

“A date for such a meeting shall be established at the summit meeting in December” writes the weekly newspaper according to which one of the ideas advanced byBerlinwould be related to the role of European Court of Justice (ECJ), which “could, for example, get the right to monitor member states’ budgets and punish the ones that have deficits. ”

But, according to the magazine “the proposal has not caused excitement among the majority of member countries”. “During an informal meeting between ten foreign ministers, a majority of them rejected the idea of such meetings, advanced by the German Minister Guido Westerwelle,” says the same source.

For the past several months, Angela Merkel has been insisting on the necessity of “moreEurope” in order to meet the challenges posed by the euro crisis.

“There are also steps towards a higher level of integration that will require changes in the Treaty (EU). We are not there, but there should be no taboos,” the Chancellor said at the end of May, during a summit of theBaltic Seacountries.
