UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed “disappointment” that the speech of President of Syria Bashar al-Assad offers no solution to the current conflict. Ban Ki-moon was “disappointed that the speech by President Bashar al Assad on 6 January does not contribute to a solution that could end the terrible suffering of the Syrian people,” said Martin Nesirky, spokesman for UN Secretary General.
Syrian opposition coalition also rejected the “political solution” proposed by Bashar al-Assad, refusing any initiative that would allow the current regime to remain in power.
According to Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian conflict is fueled and organized by foreign forces with the help of “terrorists” working with Al-Qaeda. “We are witnessing a clash between Syrian nation and its enemies, between the Syrian people and criminals,” the Syrian leader said Sunday, denouncing the alleged “attempts to divide Syria.”
“Syria will not overcome the current crisis without full national mobilization,” continued Bashar al-Assad. Syria will continue to fight “terrorism” and, at the same time, to find a political solution for reconciliation, says President Bashar al-Assad. “We met today and the pain is overwhelming on Syrian territory. There is no reason for joy in a context where we don’t have security and stability in our city streets,” said al-Assad.
“It is a conflict between those who want to take revenge on the Syrian people by dividing the country. These are enemies of the people and the enemies of Allah. And the enemies of Allah will go to hell,” continued al-Assad. “We are in a real war situation and we need to focus on winning the war,” said al-Assad. Syrian President proposes to hold a reconciliation conference with “those who have betrayed Syria”. The conference would be followed by the formation of a new government and issuing a general amnesty for the rebels, categorized as “terrorists”. “The first stage of a political solution will require stopping the financing and arming opposition from abroad, termination of terrorist operations and restore control of the border. We will not carry a dialogue with a puppet of the West,” the Syrian leader said.
Bashar al-Assad addressed the nation in front of a crowd gathered at the House of Culture and Art in central Damascus. Syria has been facing, for almost two years, a civil conflict ended, according to United Nations estimates, with approximately 60,000 deaths.
