Violence Between Prisoners and Guards in Several Prisons in Chile

Clashes between prisoners and guards have been reported in recent days in several prisons in Chile, 60 people were injured in one of the incidents, tensions erupted after a fire in a prison resulted in 81 deaths.

According to Justice Minister, Felipe Bulnes, 60 guards were injured in a confrontation with inmates in a prison in Santiago. “The situation is under control,” the minister assured.

But the guards union said that in total there are 104 injured, including 80 inmates. According to the press, many detainees were bitten of their faces by guards’ dogs.

The minister said the incidents took place while the guards conducted searches for detection the illegally objects held in cells by prisoners.

In the prison in Quillota, prisoners set fire to personal belongings and were taken the guards in a fight. A similar protest took place last week in San Miguel prison in Santiago; just two days after the blaze which killed 81 prisoners.
