Billionaire George Soros proposes a new way that can help Greeks in distress, reminiscent of a hero of the Second World War.
“We recently established the Open Society Initiative for Europe (OSI). The best place for the organization to start its business is where recent policies have created the largest human suffering: Greece. People who suffer because of politics are not the one who caused the crisis,” writes Soros.
He said that he went to Stockholm to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Raoul Wallenberg. “It reminded me of the calamity called the Second World War, which has been one of the causes that led to the birth of the European Union,” writes Soros.
Wallenberg is the hero who saved the lives of many Jews in Budapest, Soros’ hometown, through the establishment of Swedish houses that have become safe residences for them.
“We could set up such solidarity houses in Greece, which would serve as community centers for the local population and would also provide food and shelter for immigrants. The are many supply places and efforts that come from the civil society in order to help these immigrants who can not cope with the huge size of the problem. What I plan to do is give power to these existing efforts,” writes Soros.
He believes that the current policy of the EU is a failure. According to Soros, Greek immigrants who are left to live on the streets are attacked by thugs belonging to the neo-fascist groups.
“As soon as possible I will send an OSI team to contact the authorities and put in place a plan that can provide support,” says Soros. “What I want is to revive the idea of the European Union as an instrument of solidarity, not only of discipline,” writes the billionaire.
