Clive Davis, the American record producer who is credited for the worldwide success of Whitney Houston as a singer, is set to release “Whitney Houston Live: Her Greatest Performances.” This is the first ever live album of the late singer. The announcement came from Davis himself when he appeared on NBC’s Today show on Tuesday. It was also announced on the official Facebook page of Whitney Houston.
“Stemming from the ’80s and ’90s, she, without question, was the greatest vocalist in the world. I want history to know that… There was no one like her… There’s got to be an appreciation for her work.” Davis told Hoda Kotb of Today during the live interview.
“They’ve all helped me put this together. This is her legacy. This is a clarion call to the world that she was, in her time, the greatest singer,” the 82-year old five-time Grammy winner added, referring to the family of the “Bodyguard” star. The music mogul said he hopes that, through this album, the public will remember Whitney Houston as a great singer and not for her troubled life.
The Whitney Houston Live album package has 18 performances on DVD and 16 live songs on CD, and is set for release on November 10, 2014. Pre-orders are now available at Apple’s iTunes for $6.99 and at Amazon for $19.98.
One of the highlights of the album is Houston’s live performance at “Tonight Show” in 1985 where she sang “You Give Good Love.” It also includes her appearance at Super Bowl XXV in 1991 when she sang “The Star Spangled Banner”; and her performance at The Concert for a New South Africa in 1994 where she sang “I Will Always Love You.”
Back in 1983, Whitney Houston’s singing talent was noticed by a representative of Arista Records while the singer was performing with her mother in a nightclub in New York. Davis, who was then the head of Arista, was convinced to watch her perform. He was very impressed and signed Houston a recording contract.
Her first album, “Whitney Houston” was released in 1985, and became a big hit. The self-titled album received four Grammy nominations, where Houston won the award for Best Pop Vocal Performance (Female). Davis and Houston have been friends until the singer’s death on February 11, 2012 at the age of 48. Coincidentally, the Grammy award singer died one day before the 2012 Grammy Awards.
